Blogger.com – How To Add A Gadget To Blog

We use the “add a gadget” feature to add contents on the sidebar, top or bottom portion of your blogger.com blog.

There are hundred of gadgets available but the the most popular ones are:

Followers – Displays a list of users who follow your blog

HTML/Javascript – Add third-party functionality or other code to your blog.

Text – Add some words to your blog – like a welcome message – with our rich text editor.

Adsense – Earn revenue by displaying relevant ads on your blog.

Feed – Add content from an RSS or Atom feed to your blog.

Blog List – Show off what you read with a blogroll of your favorite blogs.

…and many more.

To add a gadget, login to your blogger.com account and on your dashboard click on “Layout”.

As you will notice there are three portions in this theme where you can add a gadget.

For demonstration purposes, let us add a banner in the sidebar.

Click on “Add A Gadget” on the sidebar. A pop-up window will appear to make you choose what kind of gadget you will add.

To add a banner on your site, you will need an HTML code. Click on “HTML/Javascript”.

Type in the title of the widget. In our example, our title is “RECOMMENDED PRODUCTS”. Then cut & paste or type the HTML code of the the banner you want to add.

After typing your HTML code, click on “Save” to save your gadget.

Your done adding a gadget on the sidebar of your blogger blog. Check your blog and it looks like this:

Once you have created your new blog, it is now time to add blog content to it. You will now be creating a new blog post.

Tip: You can type your blog post first in Notepad or any word processor for easy editing and proofreading. Then cut and past your newly created post to transferring it to the posting area of your blog.

Go to www.blogger.com to sign in using your Google account. You will be taken to your dashboard which look like this:

Click on “New Post” to write a blog post. You will then be taken to the posting page to add blog content.

Enter the title of your blog post. The type the content of your blog on the space provided for. Blogger.com uses a WYSIWIG panel so you don’t need to know html codes to format your content.

Don’t forget to add labels or tags to your post so that others will find it easy to look for your post.

Click on “Publish Post” to make your post public and be seen on the World Wide Web.

You have now successfully posted and published your blog. You can now view your new blog post by clicking on the “View Post” button or typing your blog address: http://yourblogname.blogspot.com.

Note: The look of your blog will depend on the theme that you use. I am using minima theme for this blog.

Congratulations! You have now added blog content to your blogger.com blog.

How To Blog Using Blogger.com

In my previous post I have defined “what is a blogging.” Now you might ask yourself “how to blog?”

As a beginner you can start to blog using a free blog platform courtesy of Blogger.com. It is the easiest way to set up a blog. You can creat your blog and publish your first post in a minutes.

I personally prefer the hosted Wordpress platform. But for those who are learning how to blog, a free one is a good start while acquiring the blogger’s mindset. The disadvantage of using blogger.com is it has limited features and you have only so much control over the design and layout of your blog. But you can upgrade later to a hosted one when funds come in and when blogging becomes part of your daily routine.

Go to www.blogger.com to start creating your blog.

How to blog with Blogger.com

Click on CREATE A BLOG to start to set up your Blogger blog. You will then be directed to this page:

Fill in the information ask for. Refer to the right side column for details on what to input on the boxes. If you have an existing Google account like Gmail, iGoogle, Google groups or Orkut, you sign in first and use that account to create a blog. Blogger.com is owned by Google so you can use your blogger account.

Create a password that is 8 characters in length, preferably use letters and numbers. Blogger.com will not accept it if your password is weak.

Display name is the name that will appear in your blog and it is visible to your readers. You can use your pen name or real name.

Don’t forget to check the “Acceptance of Terms” else you won’t be directed to the next page.

Click on “Continue” to go to the next page.

How to blog using Blogger.com

You are now on the page where you will name your blog.

In my previous post, I gave blog tips on how to create a successful blog. I have discussed a guide on what to blog. If you have now decided on what to blog then you can name your blog related to your chosen topic. If you have not decided yet then you can gave it a general name like “My Daily Journey In Life” or “A Girl’s Musing”, etc.
In the above example, I decided to review ebooks because I love books and my passion is reading.

You can refer to the notes below each box if you are not sure how to fill it up.

It is advisable to use your blog title as your blog address so that it is easy to remember. However it is not required that the two are the same. Click on “Check availability” to see if your chosen blog address is available.

Fill in the word verification and click on the orange arrow to continue to the next page.

How to blog using Blogger.com

This page will give you options to choose how your blog will look like. Choose a template that is readable, simple to navigate and not cluttered design so that your readers will not have a hard time reading your blog. Click on continue to go to the next page.

How to blog using Blogger.com

Congratulations! Your blog has been created. You can now start blogging.

Your blog address will look like this: http://yourblog.blogspot.com. In the above example it is http://ebookstosell.blogspot.com. The main domain is blogspot.com not blogger.com. However, to post in your blog and change the settings you need to login to http://www.blogger.com.

Blog Tips – Starting A Successful Blog

Are you now ready to start a successful blog?

In starting a blog, you need to change your mindset and be in the right frame of thinking. To make your blog successful you need to have a mindset of a blogger. This is one of the most important blog tips you need to know. To have a blogger’s mindset is to condition yourself to this undertaking, be committed and stay focus. This is a long term project and not just a one week activity. However, as you progress along, there are tools to automate blogging so it will not take most of your time.

You also have to understand that in starting a blog, it is not just posting your thoughts. You need to have an attainable goal to motivate you to continue doing it. One goal that most bloggers have is to make money using their blog. And to be able to make money with your blog is to get as many readers or subscribers as you can. As you publish your thoughts or expertise, you will become popular as many will visit your blog and make money with it.

Here are other blog tips to start a successful blog:

a. Write Topics You Are Passionate About or An Expert Of

Choose what kind of blog you will create by thinking of things you are passionate about or enjoy doing most. If you talk about your passion it will not be hard to find topics to write about. Your ideas will just come flowing through your mind and you’ll not run out of ideas. If you like online games, then create an online game resource blog, if you like football, then create a football blog, if you are a mother and would like to talk about motherhood, then create a blog about it. Indeed, the possibilities are endless.

Before starting a blog, write at least 10 things you are passionate about or an expert of. Rank them and evaluate each one. Choose the one where you will not ran out of topics and that you can easily find resources.

b. Modelling the More Popular Blogs

You can now search the world wide web to find blogs with similar topics. For example if you have selected the topic “weight loss” then look for similar blogs through search engines. When I say modeling, it means you get ideas from the blogs of the same topic and note it down. I didn’t mean you copy it.

c. Focus on One Niche

If you are just starting, focus in one topic or niche. Build your blog to gain a lot of traffic, higher pagerank, lots of backlinks and subscribers. Research ways where and what can make money most with your blog.

d. Never Give Up!

Blogging is not a get-rich-quick scheme. You might not be happy with the result at the beginning because traffic is very slow. But never give up. This is usually the case when you are still starting a blog. Focus on ways to improve your blog. Build your blog slowly and you will gain momentum in due time.

e. Maintain Momentum

Starting a blog is not a one-time undertaking that you just create it and then leave it. It is necessary to post at regular intervals. You need to have an abundant supply of new fresh ideas to post in your blogs. Some blog platform lets you post in advance all the articles and publish it on designated date you scheduled in advance. This will automate your blog posting.
